The project

Each of the 14 joining primary schools sends a little (toy) figure, which is somehow related to the school’s region, and a book with the beginning of an interesting story about this figure to one of the other schools. Subject of the story is a problem to be solved. At the second school the children continue the story and send it to the third school and so on. Fitting to the content or the continuation of the stories the schools also give information about typical social, geographic or cultural conditions in their countries. Texts and pictures will be published also in this website, so that everyone can follow the continuity of all stories. In the end all schools get back the filled books and the toy figure, which they had sent and which have had a long journey – maybe together with friends they had met on the way or together with other souvenirs.

The children of the joining schools work together for two years creatively on the stories and get additionally a lot of information about other countries in Europe.

12. Kimi Betyár from Szigetcsép/Hungary:

……….

13. Apollo & Phevos from Tyrnavos/Greece:

Phevos and Apollo: the beginning of their story Phevos was the Olympic games mascot in 2004. When the games were over he returned back to his normal life as being a student of primary school. One day Apollo visited him. Apollo was the Special Olympics mascot and wanted to share his experiences with Phevos. The two friends enjoyed talking about people they have met from all over the world and shared stories, fables and legends they had collected. They realized that they still needed more to collect in order to fill in a mythological atlas of Europe. So they decided to start traveling around Europe and collecting stories. First the visited a primary school in Greece and learned everything about the twelve gods and goddesses of ancient Greece.

The two mascots in Pordenone/Italy. Their first travel was to Italy. Close to Pordenone there are the ruins of a beautiful ancient town: Aquileia which was founded from Romans many centuries ago, in 181 a.C. At the beginning the town was only a small military camp, but it became big, rich and important, with the amphitheatre, the theatre, thermal baths, the forum and many villas with mosaic floors. The two friends really liked the legend about Attila, leading his army and setting Aquileia on fire. Another local legend is about Grado’s lagoon near the city where the local people tried to hide and be safe from Atilla’s troops. The small village that once built there secretely is nowadays world famous as it is VENICE.

Phevos and Apollo in Istanbul/Turkey.  The class 6-E students of Çapa Atatürk Primary School helped the two mascots to visit the famous and historical Blue Mosque. Inside the mosque they found themselves in a magic tunnel that went them back in time in the 16th century. Phevos and Apollon started walking in a beautiful garden. It was Topkapi Palace where the sultan lived. Then they met Soldiers Suleyman the Magnificent; Sultan Suleyman decided to show them Istanbul. From the terrace of palace the whole of Istanbul can be seen very well. He showed them St.Sophia, Maiden’s tower, Galata tower, Blue Mosque and beautiful Bosphorus.

Phevos and Apollo in Cascais/Portugal. Phevos and Apollo, left the beautiful city of Istanbul and traveled by ship to Portugal. The class of the 3 rd / 4 th year of EB1 Torre Cascais was waiting for them and took them to the top of the castle of St. Jorge, where they could enjoy a magnificent view across the city and its river. An aold lady narrated them the legend of Ulysses of Ithaca who, on his way to Greece, reached the mouth of the Tejo River with its ships, and decided to rest for a while. There he met Calypso and he fell in love with her. Together they had a son Abidis. Calypso’s father was very angry with Odysseus and put the baby in a basket sending it away by the river. The wolves found the baby and took care of him. When he grew old his grandfather decided that he would be his heir and so he became a brave and wise king. Apollo and Phevos really enjoyed this story and the time they spent at school in Portugal.

Phevos and Apollo in Vidin/Bulgaria. The students from Lyuben Karavelov School narrated Phevos and Apollo the story of the Samodivi. In the Slavic tradition, the samodivi are forest spirits that take the form of beautiful young women. They are forever young, with long fair hair, long white robes, and bewitching eyes that can sweep a man off their feet and even kill him. These mysterious creatures are mistresses of the waters and can bring about drought. All samodivi are sisters. During nights in the spring, when the moon rises, they get together in open glades deep in the forests or Rila and Pirin mountain and dance the horo barefooted. Nothing is more beautiful that the song and dance of a samodiva. A samodiva is in the human world from early spring (March 25th) to the late summer (August 29th). She spends the cold months in the secret village Zmeikovo together with the zmeiove (zmei – a Slavic dragon), rusalki (rusalka – a Slavic mermaid), and vili (vila or samovila – another Slavic female forest spirit). Phevos and Apollo were very happy to learn about Bulgariam mythology creatures and went on their European adventures.
